However, the 23-year-old has been made to wait to make his first Premier League start of the season, with Mourinho preferring to partner Eric Bailly and Phil Jones for the Red Devils’ opening three games.

Manchester United have made a fine start to the new season and have won all three of their opening games against West Ham, Swansea and Leicester to move top of the table.

However, with Jones and Bailly suspended for the Champions League clash against Basel at Old Trafford on 12 September, Mourinho confirmed that Lindelof would start alongside Chris Smalling in the heart of defence.

Speaking at his post-match news conference at Old Trafford on Saturday, Mourinho said: “Eric is playing really well. I have to say Smalling is in very good conditions and I have also to say Victor is improving every day.“So, as you know, against Basel Jones and Eric are both suspended.
“So against Basel we will play Victor and Smalling and no problem at all. The squad is good and the mentality of the players is very good too.”

Manchester United return to Premier League action after the international break when they take on Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium on Saturday 9 September.
The Red Devils are aiming to win the Premier League for the first time this season since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement back in 2013.
