Jose Mourinho urges Manchester United hierarchy to launch £100m bid for Gareth Bale – report
Jose Mourinho has urged the Manchester United hierarchy to launch a £100m bid for Gareth Bale before the window shuts despite publicly admitting that there was no chance the club could sign the Welshman, according to reports.

The 54-year-old, speaking after Man United’s 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup, insisted that it was “game over” in his pursuit of the winger after he featured from the start in Skopje.

Madrid president Florentino Perez has since made it clear that Bale – rumoured to be ushered out the back door to make way for Kylian Mbappe – was an important player at the Bernabeu.

But Mourinho, according to the Sun‘s Alan Nixon, has continued to urge the United board to make efforts to sign Bale.

Perhaps the 54-year-old’s comments on Bale were intended to serve as a smokescreen of sorts – to stop the story dead and allow the men in suits at United to quietly get to work in similar fashion to how they shocked the world by pinching Romelu Lukaku from under Chelsea’s nose.

Ed Woodward has the required assets – set to be £200m as an overall spread – to sign Bale, with both Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic off the payroll, but prizing Bale away from the greatest club side in the world – especially if Kylian Mbappe stays at AS Monaco – could prove to be a thankless task.
